Auburn folks are still treating us well!
The youngins are all grown up now!
~The oldest is a chef who manages food services for a new assisted living facility,
married to his school sweetheart & has a young beautiful daughter of his own.
~ The youngest is now stretching her wings in the grown up working world
& has a down to earth, wonderful new man in her life.
Here is our story of how we got started...
Our Story
As we look back, opening a family store was really a seed that was sown when Momma was a youngin’. Or as Nanny & Pa like to tell everyone, Momma knew she what she wanted to do at age two… the first time she played store. Pa otta know…he was her Dad, her role model & Nanny, her Mom, was her first customer!
The seed sprouted back in 1988 with a dream to earn a little extra so Momma could stay home with the youngins. Paintin’, buildin’ birdhouses,barn wood furniture, years of craft shows & festivals took over the homestead, the kitchen table, the cellar, the car shack out back & the Lane family life. It didn't take long for Daddy to stick his nose in the business & he created “his craft”…good smellin’ (potpourri) Christmas ornaments. They were a big hit! Then in 1996, after Momma took sick (allergic to barn wood), our good smellin’, hand mixed (with the youngins help) potpourri served up in mercantile bins became the family business. When folks couldn’t get enough of our potpourri over the years, the seedling grew. And in the early days of 2003, the Lane family opened Country Lane General Store at the Avilla Mercantile. Crafty folks with good old-fashioned quality merchandise joined us. Country & city folk alike became smitten’ with us! And fast as a Jack rabbit, Country Lane General Store outgrew its britches in Avilla.
Early 2004, Country Lane General Store “moved on down the lane” to the nostalgic, “Classic City of the World “ Auburn, Indiana. With an unbelievable old fashioned barn raisin’ attitude…family, friends & new Auburn neighbors blessed us with long work hours of hammerin’, paintin’, borrowin’ tools & muscle, meals, emotional & technical support & lots more, week after week they all toiled to expand & build on Momma’s dream. Special Thanks to All Y’all from the bottom of the whole Lane family heart!

Spring of 2007, we expanded & added on the "MERCANTILE" a 1000 sq. ft. of additional floor space to accomadate our larger antique Merchants.
Now, Country Lane General Store offers 5000 sq. ft. packed full of everything but the kitchen sink...we've got the stove...& we could put the sink on our "Search List" if you're really interested!
